We watched some excerpts to inspire us to do exercise 1. We watched Lumière minutes and talked about the position of the camera and why the director chose to put the camera there, and then we talked about the shots. In Nenette, for example, the first shots are very close, we don’t immediately realize what animal it is, and the first thing we see are the eyes, which are reminiscent of human eyes. We also talked about the sound, how we hear lots of different people looking at Nenette and we never see them, we also look at Nenette and the other orangutans.

We’ve seen Beppie (Van der Keuken), she always knows she’s being filmed. She talks a lot, sometimes you hear Beppie talking, but you see her doing other things. Sometimes it looks like that’s what she’s thinking, like when she’s at the movies. Beppie seemed very free, walking around the city alone with her friends.

We went to the Cinemateca in Lisbon to see Être et Avoir (Philibert), and then we talked about the movie at school. We remember scenes where it was very clear that the film crew was there – when the teacher talks to the camera – scenes where it feels as if the crew isn’t there, but it’s a bit strange that they are – like the scene where the teacher talks to the two boys who have had a fight – or when it doesn’t seem to make any difference that the crew is there – like the math homework scene with the family of one of the boys. And also when it seems that the scenes have happened for the camera, like in a fictional movie – like the scene in the field where they call for a girl who has disappeared.

film reviews

The movie we are writing about in entitled Flee. It’s a documentary film. It is original because it’s an animation film with archive pictures. The movie was directed by Poher Rasmussen and was realized on 17 june 2021 in Denmark. It is starring Daniel Karimyar and Fardin Mydzadok as Amin  and Milad Eskandri and  Belal Faiz as Saif.

It’s based on a testimony of Amin Nawabi (it’s a pseudonym) in 2021. The film deals with immigration, the refugees experience and the quest for identity.

It was awarded distinctions and accolades had the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021 and it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2022.

The scene in set first in Afghanistan, then in Russia and finally in Denmark and the action takes place nowadays. The story revolves around Amin who left Afghanistan because of war. This is the story of Amin’s family who are threatened in Afghanistan because of war.  They left their country and they went to Russia to find peace. But in there, they were illegals and undocumented. They tried to leave Russia, but they were recaptured before their arrival in Sweden. After that, only Amin’s sisters succeed in settling in Sweden. Finally, after a long time, Amin arrives and settles in Denmark. In this place, he could find and accept his identity. He finally can live his homosexuality not as an illness but as a real way to love.

It allows us to understand better the consequences of war, the long cross of emigrants and the acceptance of homosexuality. The film was really interesting. We see the difficult travel that they made across different countries. During all the film, the atmosphere was stressful and tensed. Our favorite moment is when Amin met a boy in the car who must bring them to the airport to go to Denmark. This moment is rather romantic. The two boys learnt to know each others and even if they are separated then, their relationship is beautiful. It could be better if there were more archive pictures.

The end gives us hope because at the end of the story, Amin and his partner finally married each other.

Alexine, Lucas, Mathilde

The movie we are writing about is entitled I, Daniel Blake. It’s a drama which  was directed by Ken Loach and released on October 26, 2016.

It is starring Dave Johns as Daniel Blake and Hayley Squires as Katie. The film deals with social services and health problems.

It was awarded the Palme d’or in 2016, Empire Award best of British movie and the Cesar of best foreign movie.

The scene is set in the United Kingdom and the action takes place in 2010. The story revolves around Daniel Blake who suffers heart conditions and Katie, a single mother with two children who are going to be ill-treated by social services. They try to help each other.

Our favorite moment is when Daniel tags on the wall so as to rebel against society and we liked the moment when he has to create a wooden fish for Katie’s daughter. This moment is so cute.

We can’t stand it when Daniel dies at the end, because it’s so sad, we think it’s long awaited by spectator.

We were shocked when Katie has to prostitute and Daniel comes in the house where Katie is. This moment is very embarrassing and sad.

Even if we didn’t like secondary characters, we can’t deny that we have appreciated main characters.

To conclude, we like this movie because it’s moving, realistic and sad. We generally like sad movies that’s why we like this movie.

Film review, I, Daniel Blake

The movie we are writing about is entitled I, Daniel Blake and it belongs to the social realism movement. It was directed by Ken Loach and the plot was written by Paul Laverty. This movie deals with unemployment and poverty. I, Daniel Blake was released in 2016 and the same year, it was awarded The Palme d’Or. It is starring Dave Johns as Daniel Blake, Hayley Squires as Katie, Brianna Shann as Daisy and Dylan McKiernan as Dylan.

The scene set in Newcastle, near Manchester, in Northern England and the action takes place in the 21st century. This is the story of Daniel Blake, a fifty-year-old man who had a heart attack and cannot work anymore. He wants to get allowance because of his unemployment but the Job Center is not understanding. He meets a poor family and helps this family to have a better life. They will fight together to have jobs or allowances until the end…

I liked this film because it allows us to understand the difficulty for some people to find a job and live in poverty. We become attached to the characters and Ken Loach films them very near of us. We take part in the private life of the people. We are snatched by the story and I felt all the emotions of the characters. My favourite moment is when the little boy, Dylan makes fishes out of the wood and he is very quiet. All along the film, I felt bad for the mother who gives up her health for her children. I also think that the end is very touching. However, there is an excess of misfortune and too many clichés of poverty. They have bad lives and they continue to have misfortune, they cannot stand up again.

Even if we can move to pity, we can’t deny that it deserves its Palme d’Or, we feel a lot of emotions when we watch it and we become aware of the difficulty of life. This is for me the best film that I have watched and I recommend you to see it.

Chloé & Charline

What I like best is the fraternity between Daniel and Katie. I didn’t
have a particular favorite moment. I think the plot is so negative, I was
disappointed by this. Even if the film is so dramatic, we can’t deny the beautiful
fraternity between Daniel and Katie. I think the end was so predictable; Daniel
Blake died; for me it’s disappointing.

The Old Oak is the thirty- third and latest movie of the incredible Ken Loach. The film deals with racism, particularly xenophobia, and also with solidarity, the pillar of his films. His main actors are Dave Turner who played TJ Ballantyne and Ebla Mari who played Yara. It is Ken Loach’s choice that they’re not very famous. It reinforces the realistic aspect and I find that Dave looks real in his role.

We follow TJ Ballantyne, the barman of The Old Oak, the only pub in this former miner’s village located in the North of England. His business works because of his regular customers who, every day take refuge in the pub to discuss the hardness of life. That is when a family of Syrian refugees arrive in the town creating tensions. However, our barman became friends with Yara, a young migrant passionate about photography. Together, they will try to bring back to life the saying: « When you eat together, you stick together. ».

It was a great experience, I really liked it. The scene that I keep in memory is the one where the whole village, even those who disapproved of the refugees’ arrival, come to offer flowers and condolences to the Syrian family. It was an emotional moment. By the way, Ken Loach has a certain talent for keep us in suspense, making us cry and then slightly smiling, still full of hope for humanity.

Marjane

The movie I am writing about is entitled Sorry We Misssed You. It’s a documentary drama directed by Ken Loach. It’s starring Kris Hitchen as Ricky; Debbie Honneywood, Katie Proctor and Rhis McGrowan as Abby, Liza and Seb. The film deals with social injustice. It was awarded Best European movie award of 2021.

The scene is set in new Castle in the United-Kingdom. The story revolves around Ricky, a father of 2 children. Ricky and his wife Abby work hard to own as much money as they need to live. They have to make sacrifices for their jobs which is going to have consequences on their family relation.

The movie allows us to understand the cause of uberisation and the problems caused by hard work. What I like the most is the different reactions of each character in front of the same situations, but you understand all reactions because they don’t live them with the same point of view. I am impressed by the capacity they have to enjoy one moment forget their problems (like when they were all in the truck). But there are too many problems which the family have to get through, it is a bit too much. I also found that sometimes they overreacted the situation.

Even if sometimes characters are not realistic, we can’t deny that it helps understand the message better.

It is all the more interesting as the movie takes a place in the 21st century so this is current problems which this film highlights.

Thibault

The movie we are writing about is entitled Sorry We Missed You. It’s a drama film directed by Ken Loach and released in 2019. It is starring Kris Hitchen as Ricky Turner and Katie Proctor as Lizie Jane. The film deals with the uberisation of work and family problems. It was awarded the Gopo Award for Best European movie.

The scene is set in Newcastle and the action takes place in the 2010s. It’s the story of a poor family after the Subprime mortgage crisis. The father, Ricky, gets a new job, but as it goes on, more and more problems appear in their family and work.

This movie allows us to compare our lives with theirs as we try to understand their struggles. It made me compassionate because the family has so many issues, moreover, I was impressed by how good the actors were. Finally, the sound track made the movie better because it goes perfectly with the dialogues.

But there are some bad points too. The family has so many problems it makes it unrealistic. I was disappointed by the ending because it leaves too many questions unanswered and is too surprising. I think a movie ending shouldn’t be so brutal and random. Even if the family’s problems are too many, we can’t deny that a lot of people are actually the victims of these situation. And in spite of the good acting performance, the film remains slow and a bit boring.

Raphaël & Lior

This movie plot is a little repetitive. I find this film describes a routine : Ricky goes to his job and he’s often pressed, Seb is boosted out of his class and there’s a quarrel every evening. This film is very realistic : I have an impression of nothing new in that. It seems me boring but I think K.Loach did it on purpose. He wants the viewer to have this impression. Moreover, K. Loach tried to hide it : every day, the routine is the same ; but we note that there is something more every day. For example, one day Liza Jane helps her dad and the other day, Seb tags on a street wall with his friends and Freddie lays off employees.

I also have good memories about this movie. My favorite moment is when Ricky Turner was hit by young people because this gives action. The story becomes interesting and our characters are faced with a dilemma between being sick, leave and no longer being paid or continuing to work despite their injuries endured in the fight. I was impressed by Liza Jane’s character when her family are arguing.
