Cinema TAKE – exercice 1

Exercise 1 was so much fun!

After discussing many extracts in our workshops, discussing the ‘otherness’ and what it means to film the other, we took on the streets and did some filming!

A group of children discussing how to approach people and ask for permission to film.

We were divided in 3 groups. 2 groups chose to film a person at work, and one group to film an animal. We had to plan our filming session in the previous session, so we were fully ready when we went out filming.

A group at a tailor’s place – setting up for filming.

The experience was amazing. We were out filming for few hours, just to film one minute sequence. It showed us the patience needed to make a documentary, and make sure we respect ‘the other’, go at their own pace, catch the best moments to film them in action, and film it with our own eyes.

At the tailor’s

We had to learn working as a team, and make sure we get confortable with the filming equipment.

Filming a stray dog

On the next workshop, we watched all our footages and decided which ones were the best. Then we worked all day on making a voice over and added it to the selected footages.

It showed us how we can use image and sound separately but also how we can really tell a story, when we work on editing our footage. We are so excited to get out there again and do more filming!

Here are the videos to see our work (exercice 1):
