Pouco haver\u00e1 de diferente entre a emo\u00e7\u00e3o que emana de cada testemunho deste filme e da celebra\u00e7\u00e3o do nascimento de algu\u00e9m, talvez tal se deva ao facto do 25 de abril de 1974 ter sido o \u201c(re)nascer\u201d de um pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs Armas e o Povo\u201d <\/em>\u00e9 um filme de 1975, realizado, contrariamente \u00e0 maioria dos filmes, por um conjunto de cineastas. Este incide sobre os primeiros dias da liberdade: acompanhando, auxiliado por imagens de arquivo, a Revolu\u00e7\u00e3o dos Cravos, at\u00e9 ao seu cl\u00edmax <\/em>no dia 1 de maio de 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neste filme, que antes de filme \u00e9 uma mem\u00f3ria coletiva, acompanhamos aqueles que foram alguns momentos-chave da viragem democr\u00e1tica por que Portugal passou. Sempre sob o ponto de vista cru e imediato do coletivo de cineastas \u201cTrabalhadores da Actividade Cinematogr\u00e1fica\u201d<\/em> que correu as ruas, bairros tentando captar aqueles que foram os primeiros sintomas da liberdade para a sociedade lisboeta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desde a liberta\u00e7\u00e3o de presos, a entrevistas aos habitantes, ao discurso de M\u00e1rio Soares e \u00c1lvaro Cunhal no 1\u00ba de Maio; tudo foi gravado e eternizado, naquelas que viriam a ser algumas das mais impactantes imagens da \u00e9poca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esta \u00e9 uma obra coletiva a pensar num coletivo e sai \u00e0s ruas precisamente com essa ideia. Com esta \u00e2nsia de saber como foram passados aqueles 48 anos, se bem se mal; que expectativas h\u00e1 para os pr\u00f3ximos tempos; que receios que medos. Tamb\u00e9m esta premissa \u00e9 revolucion\u00e1ria, \u00e9 a primeira vez em meio s\u00e9culo que algo \u00e9 feito e \u00e9 para o povo portugu\u00eas: n\u00e3o s\u00f3 \u00e9 para este, como \u00e9 sobre este e este \u00e9 quem brilha aqui. Esta massa popular tem o poder de fazer destas grava\u00e7\u00f5es algo sobre si e para os seus, de dizer nestas grava\u00e7\u00f5es, aquilo que lhe foi privado durante anos: era a liberdade a passar por ali. \u201cEsta \u00e9 a madrugada que eu esperava \/ O dia inicial inteiro e limpo \/ Onde emergimos da noite e do sil\u00eancio \/ E livres habitamos a subst\u00e2ncia do tempo<\/em>\u201d (Sophia de Mello Breyner)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is little difference between the emotion that emanates from each testimony in this film and the celebration of someone’s birth, perhaps because 25 April 1974 was the \u2018(re)birth\u2019 of a country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018As Armas e o Povo\u2019 is a film from 1975, made, unlike most films, by a group of filmmakers. It focuses on the first days of freedom: following the Carnation Revolution, with the help of archive footage, right up to its climax on 1 May 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this film, which, before being a film, is a collective memory, we follow some of the key moments in Portugal’s democratic turnaround. Always from the raw and immediate point of view of the collective of filmmakers \u2018Trabalhadores da Actividade Cinematogr\u00e1fica\u2019 (Film Activity Workers), who toured the streets and neighbourhoods trying to capture what were the first symptoms of freedom for Lisbon society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the release of prisoners, to interviews with residents, to M\u00e1rio Soares and \u00c1lvaro Cunhal’s speech on the 1st of May; everything was recorded and immortalised in what would become some of the most impactful images of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a collective work with a collective in mind and it takes to the streets precisely with that idea. With this desire to know how those 48 years went, whether well or badly; what expectations there are for the times to come; what fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This premise is also revolutionary, it’s the first time in half a century that something has been made for the Portuguese people: not only is it for them, but it’s about them and they are the ones who shine here.
