Nous avons vu First Cow de Kelly Reichardt le vendredi 18 novembre \u00e0 Mon Cin\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly Reichardt est une sc\u00e9nariste et r\u00e9alisatrice am\u00e9ricaine. Elle tourne en 1995 son premier long m\u00e9trage. Elle r\u00e9alise en 2010 un western tr\u00e8s atypique La derni\u00e8re Piste . First Cow<\/em> est sorti en 2019. C’est l’adaptation du roman The Half-Life<\/em>. Le film remporte le prix du jury au festival du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain de Deauville en 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les codes classiques du western sont tr\u00e8s vite reconnaissables . Le western a un r\u00f4le dans la construction de l\u2019identit\u00e9 nationale am\u00e9ricaine avec les figures du pionnier, du cow-boy, du sh\u00e9rif, issues d\u2019un peuple conqu\u00e9rant. L\u2019homme blanc est toujours en droit d\u2019imposer sa loi. Il valorise l\u2019aventure individuelle<\/strong>, un monde o\u00f9 le bien et le mal s\u2019affrontent,<\/strong> un monde binaire. Est valoris\u00e9 le courage des hommes blancs issus de l\u2019immigration anglaise et irlandaise, des pionniers capables de dompter la nature vierge.<\/strong> L\u2019homme se fait justice par lui-m\u00eame. Le saloon est l\u2019espace des tensions et des pulsions. Nous l’avons vu dans la s\u00e9quence d’ouverture de Rio Bravo<\/em> de Howard Hawks<\/strong> o\u00f9 l’homme blanc est arm\u00e9 et incarn\u00e9 par le sh\u00e9rif interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre John Wayne. La contre plong\u00e9e \u00e0 son arriv\u00e9e le magnifie comme le seul capable de ramener l’ordre et le bien. Lorsqu’on entre en action, on filme \u00e0 hauteur des colts en plans am\u00e9ricains…Mais on a vu que dans les ann\u00e9es 1970, le r\u00eave de la conqu\u00eate de l’ouest n’est plus le m\u00eame. Certains westerns prennent m\u00eame le contrepied, et montrent des hommes blancs moins h\u00e9ro\u00efques <\/strong>et des Indiens plus valoris\u00e9s. First Cow n’est pas un film de h\u00e9ros <\/strong>o\u00f9 s’affrontent le bien et le mal, mais surtout un film sur l’amiti\u00e9<\/strong>, quelque soit les origines. Un film qui ressemble \u00e0 un western, mais est d\u00e9centr\u00e9 du genre du western. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie we are writing about is entitled \u00ab\u00a0First Cow\u00a0\u00bb. It is a western that was directed by Kelly Richardt and released in 2019. It is starring John Magaro as Cookie and Orion Lee as King Lu. It is based on a novel written by Jonathan Raymond in 2004. The film deals with friendship and all the inequalities at that time. It was awarded the Jury’s Prize at the Deauville Film Festival in 2020, among others.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scene is set in Oregon Country and the action takes place in the 19th century. The story revolves around Cookie and King-Lu who, after meeting in the forest, will become friends.
Seeing that the richest man in the surroundings just imported a cow, they have the idea of stealing the cow’s milk to bake doughnuts and sell them at the local market. After becoming quite known to the locals, they are invited by the cow’s owner to go to his house and bake a clafoutis<\/em> for his guests. The night after that, while they are stealing some milk, as usual, one of our two friends falls off a tree and alerts the guards. Then, after a long chase, Cookie and King-Lu die together lying in the forest.

\u00ab\u00a0First Cow\u00a0\u00bb decenters the genre of the western in many ways:
Firstly, by its depiction of the 2 main characters. Instead of making them look tough and manly, the film presents Cookie and King-Lu as vulnerable and sensitive.

It also decenters the American western genre with its stunning cinematography and the omnipresence of nature in the movie. The film is also super calm with almost no fights. The only fighting scene shown is rendered comically, as it involves mainly the father of a very young baby, who entrusts him to the care of Cookie to get outside and fight!

\u00ab\u00a0First Cow\u00a0\u00bb allows us to see a beautiful friendship (nearly love) between two men which is also unusual in a western. We also were impressed by the beauty of the film and the Oregon wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the film’s ending may leave some viewers feeling unsatisfied or wanting more resolution, we can’t deny that the fantastic cinematography captures the beauty and simplicity of the Oregon wilderness in the 19th century. Despite the film’s slow pacing which we may find unappealing, it remains a beautiful story about friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
